Following on from becoming a sponsor of Burgess Hill Rugby Football Club in March 2017, where e-mpower.IT (also based in Burgess Hill) sponsored a veranda board overlooking BHRFC pitch. We then had another idea! Although we actually specialise in offering quality Managed IT Services and IT Support to growing businesses in Sussex and the south east, e-mpower.IT thought it would be great to take part in one of the rugby training sessions, not with the men but the Ladies Rugby Team – also known as the Black Widows. Here’s how it went….
E-mpower.IT’s Marketing Manager, Jo Carver and the Owner/Director’s wife, Elaine Lokhandvala headed on down for the training session at Burgess Hill rugby pitch on a mild Wednesday night. Full of anxiety and anticipation they weren’t quite sure what to expect, but, none the less both got stuck into the training which included mauls, pad work, ball work and finished with a quick game of tag rugby at the end. When asked “why they wanted to attend?” Jo Carver advised, “Since e-mpower.IT is a sponsor of BHRFC we wanted to give the Club some ‘active support’, what better way to do this than participate in a rugby training session along with the boss’s wife! For us it was a chance to not only show our support as a sponsor to the Club but also help promote the Black Widows.” She continued by saying “The training session was great fun and gave us a flavor of what was involved. The girls are a friendly, social bunch and if you are looking for something different to do which also helps you get fit, then women’s rugby could be for you.” The boss – Jaffer Lokhandvala, also attended as a photographer and took a few shots of what was involved in the training session. He commented “They all look like they had lots of fun, it was great to see but I’m not sure I’ll be joining in the men’s rugby training any time soon!”
Lucy Tyrell is the coach for the Black Widows and has been involved with coaching and playing for 20 years, Lucy started when she was in the Juniors and has enjoyed it ever since. Lucy commented that “Elaine and Jo were fantastic at joining in, they are always welcome to come along to training with the Black Widows at any time.” The Black Widows formed in November 2016 where they played a couple of games against Heathfield and Pulborough Ladies Rugby Clubs as well as taking part in a 7’s tag tournament. This season the Black Widows are looking to get more involved by playing more games and practice what they’ve learnt in their training sessions. If you would like to give it a go, just turn up – training sessions are every Wednesday at BHRFC ground from 7pm to 8pm and all ladies are very welcome to come along.
