The WordPress platform now boasts that over 25% of all websites are powered by their CMS system, since its release in May 2003. That’s over 10 million sites from small blogs, wedding photographers, artists to major companies such as Sony Music and AMC’s The Walking Dead.
One thing that affects all of the sites that use WordPress is the constant threat of attack, not only on the pages but at site level as well. With updates from WordPress coming monthly and even daily, for some plugins such as Wordfence (security plugin) it’s easy to keep on top of things.
However, extra steps can always be taken when it comes to backing up your site daily, weekly or even hourly, if you so wish. Here’s one tip we suggest to our clients when talking about website backups. For this tip we will to look at UpdraftPlus, a backup service.
UpdraftPlus offers a lot out of the box and is quite painless to setup. Once you have found the plugin, installed and activated it, all that is left to do is open the main UpdraftPlus page from within “Settings”.
This will give you several options; “Backup Now“, “Restore” and “Clone / Migrate“. Clicking “Backup Now” will allow you to backup to several locations from Local through to Amazon or Dropbox.
For our clients we recommend backing up to Dropbox where WordPress backup is concerned or, using a cloudbased system as well as locally – giving a belt and braces approach. Every night it will backup the core folders of the WordPress install and securely save them – just in case the worst happens. Restoring in the case of a system issue; is as simple as clicking on backup and hitting restore.
This is the free version however there are several options if you want more from your backup solution.
Here is a little more from UpdraftPlus:
“Your site is susceptible to hacking; server crashes, dodgy updates and user error. That’s why you need UpdraftPlus, the world’s highest rated and most installed WordPress backup plugin.”
