Sometimes it’s the smallest and simplest things that can have the most impact on your safety in the Cyber World. E-mpower.IT has put to together 5 simple tips to help you protect your business from cyber-crime. These are easy to do and can be done quickly, however, many of us will put off doing them until it’s too late.

1. Passwords

Use good, cryptic passwords which include: a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols, at least 8 characters in length (or longer if they’re less complex). Also, don’t use real words or personal information like user name, names of family members, places, pets, birthdays, etc, choose ones that are harder to guess.

2. Storage of sensitive information

Delete sensitive information whenever you can and don’t keep it on portable devices (such as laptops, tablets, phones) unless they are properly protected. These items are extra vulnerable to theft or loss. Make backup copies of files or data you are not willing to lose and store the copies very securely.

3 Protect yourself when using the Internet and email

Only use trusted, secure web pages when entering personal or sensitive information online. Don’t log into web sites or online applications unless the login page is secure – if the URL starts with https, the ‘s’ indicates it is a secure connection.

4. Wireless warning

If using the wireless you need to be particularly careful as most public access wireless is unencrypted. This makes it very easy for hackers to access it. Also ensure your wireless preferences/settings to your devices aren’t set up to auto-connect to any wireless network they detect. Auto-connecting to unknown networks is likely to put you at risk.

5. Antivirus

Make sure your computer is protected with anti-virus and all the necessary security “patches” and updates.  Ensure you know what you need to do, to keep them current including: shutting down or restarting your computer at least weekly. Install update whenever your programs tell you to, this helps to make sure software and security updates are properly installed.
